CHAPTER 05 OF 06

Into the wilderness

Wilderness of Paran · approximate region

The road from Sinai is long. Through provision, uncertainty, and repeated questions of trust, a generation learns what it means to live as God’s people in the wilderness.

Numbers 14:26–35

You might be wondering...

Why forty years in the wilderness?

Numbers connects the forty years with the forty days spent scouting the land. The people’s refusal to trust God’s promise means that a new generation will be the one to enter Canaan.

How were the people sustained?

The biblical narrative describes manna, quail, and water provided in the desert. These stories emphasize both God’s provision and the people’s struggle to trust.
