Illustrative map · regional context

At Dothan

Canaan · Betrayed by his brothers

Joseph searches for his brothers near Shechem and learns that they have moved to Dothan. They see him coming, strip him of his robe, and throw him into an empty cistern. A passing caravan changes his future.

Genesis 37:15–28

Ancient locations and the route shown are approximate.

You might be wondering...

Why was Joseph put in a cistern?

Reuben urges the brothers to throw Joseph into a pit rather than shed his blood, intending to rescue him later. Genesis says the cistern is empty and has no water.

Where was the caravan going?

Genesis describes traders coming from Gilead with camels carrying goods down to Egypt. It does not give the full road they followed.
