Entering Jerusalem

Jerusalem · A king arrives

Jesus approaches Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, riding a colt. People spread cloaks and branches along the way, greeting him with cries of praise as the story enters its final week.

Mark 11:1–11

You might be wondering...

Why did Jesus ride a colt?

The humble arrival is connected in the Gospel tradition with the promise of a king coming on a donkey in Zechariah 9:9. The scene combines royal welcome with a strikingly modest entrance.

What happens next?

The Gospels continue with Jesus’ teaching in Jerusalem, the Last Supper, his arrest and crucifixion, and the resurrection. These events form the climax of their accounts.
