Growing up in Nazareth

Luke’s account · A childhood in Galilee

Luke describes Jesus growing strong, becoming wise, and living with God’s favor. The account offers brief glimpses of family life in Nazareth, leaving most of his childhood untold.

Luke 2:39–40, 51–52

These chapters group episodes from Matthew and Luke, rather than a complete itinerary.

You might be wondering...

What do we know about Jesus’ childhood?

Matthew and Luke tell selected stories of his birth and early years. Luke describes his growth and one temple visit at twelve. The Gospels provide few details about the intervening years, so this page keeps those gaps visible.

Was Nazareth an important place in the story?

Both Matthew and Luke associate Jesus’ upbringing with Nazareth in Galilee. The town also appears as his home when the Gospels describe the beginning of his public ministry.
