Illustrative map · locations approximate

Jesus is born

Bethlehem · Good news for the shepherds

While Mary and Joseph are in Bethlehem, Jesus is born. Mary wraps him in cloths and lays him in a manger. Shepherds come to find the child after hearing the angel’s announcement.

Luke 2:6–20

Bethlehem is named in the text; this marker is illustrative.

You might be wondering...

Why was Jesus laid in a manger?

Luke says that Mary laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the lodging place. The passage does not give a detailed description of the building.

Who visited the child in Luke’s account?

Shepherds came after hearing the angel’s announcement. Matthew separately tells of visitors from the east; these are distinct scenes in the Gospel accounts.
