CHAPTER 03 OF 06

Artist’s reconstruction

Into Egypt

Matthew’s account · Seeking safety

Warned in a dream, Joseph takes Mary and the child Jesus to Egypt during the night. Matthew describes their escape from Herod, but does not name the route or where they stayed.

Matthew 2:13–15

Egypt is shown as a region, not an exact stop.

You might be wondering...

Where in Egypt did they stay?

Matthew says only that they went to Egypt and remained until Herod’s death. The Gospel names no town, route, or house. Later traditions associate places with the family, but this map does not present any one of them as a confirmed stop.

Why did the family leave at night?

The warning concerned an immediate threat to the child’s life. Matthew says that Joseph got up and took the child and his mother away by night, emphasizing his prompt response to the dream.
